My conversation this week with Landscape Architect, Sue Reed, shed some light on how to create aesthetically beautiful, energy saving gardens, yards, parks, and other spaces that need to be reclaimed for sustainable living.

The remarkable journey this environmentally conscious design takes us on is one where you realize that your personal landscape choices CAN make a huge difference in making the world “Green” rather than toxic.

1.) Choose Native Plants. This creates a place for butterflies, bees, and birds and other wildlife to live and you will be energy-wise since you won’t need to water your garden/yard so much.
2.) Clover is a natural lawn cover that does not need to be mowed, ever. It also doesn’t need extra watering.
3.) Lighting should be LED and should be on a motion detector. Light pollution is a huge environmental issue and kills millions of migrating birds every year. A green or blue light is better than a yellow light, since migrating birds are not attracted to these colors in landscape/building/garden lighting. Also, use solar lighting where applicable.
4.)Get Electric Lawn Mowers/Leaf Blowers/Weeders, etc. This is a very QUIET option and it is certainly significantly more friendly to our ecology. America alone uses over 1 Billion gallons of gasoline PER YEAR on mowing lawns.

These are just a few tips that Sue Reed gave to the Conscious Lifestyles listeners.

Sue’s book, “Energy-Wise Landscape Design” is available now online and at any book retailer.

Check out Sue’s blog, Energy Wise Landscape and start your own Oasis that is naturally alive, beautiful, honorable, clean, environmentally sensitive, and a place to gather and truly celebrate life.

Other sites Sue Reed suggests to visit:

National Wildlife Federation
Lawn Reform
Ecological Landscape Association
Protecting Birds From Windows
North American Native Plant Society
The Wild Ones Organization
International Dark Sky Association
